Buffer, BetterSocials and the per-seat schedulers: 2026 prices side by side
BetterSocials vs Buffer compared for 2026: flat pricing, unlimited contacts and AI replies versus Buffer's per-channel plans for solo creators.
By Stack & Funnel staff8 min read
Buffer bills per channel, not per person: Essentials is $5 a channel a month billed yearly, or $6 monthly, as of October 2026. Its inbox answers comments but has no DMs, so pick Buffer if you mostly schedule posts. Pick BetterSocials if comments and DMs bring you customers. It puts both in one inbox with AI replies in your voice, and Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts.
Hootsuite and Sprout Social charge per seat instead. Which model costs you less depends on how many accounts, people and contacts you have.
The short answer on Buffer and BetterSocials
Buffer is cheaper than BetterSocials for one person on four or six accounts, and BetterSocials is cheaper for a team on twelve. We took this one pricing first, with each billing period named and the date we read each price beside it. Buffer's figures come from Buffer's pricing page, read October 22, 2026, and the BetterSocials prices come from its plan list dated the same day.
At four or six accounts, the extra money on BetterSocials buys the DM side of the inbox and keyword comment-to-DM, and BetterSocials also drafts replies in your voice. Comment-to-DM means a keyword in a comment sends that person a private message with your link. Buffer wins on price, and it has a free plan.
Per seat, per channel or per plan: how schedulers bill in 2026
Buffer bills per channel, BetterSocials bills per plan, and Hootsuite and Sprout Social bill per seat. A seat is one login for one person, and a channel is Buffer's word for one connected social account. The model decides what makes your bill grow: a new hire, a new account or a move up a tier.
The table shows the plan we priced for each tool and what raises its bill, from vendor pricing pages read October 16 and October 22, 2026. ManyChat's prices were read September 30, 2026.
| Plan | Billed by | Price seen | Bill grows with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buffer Essentials | Per channel | $5 a channel yearly, $6 monthly | Each channel you connect |
| BetterSocials Creator | Per plan | $24 yearly, $29 monthly, four accounts | Each plan step up |
| Hootsuite Standard | Per user | $99 a user, billed annually | Each user you add |
| Sprout Social Essentials | Per seat | $79 a seat yearly, $99 monthly | Each seat you add |
| ManyChat Pro | Per active contact | $29 yearly, $39 monthly | Each contact past 2,500 |
BetterSocials Creator is one login. Pro covers six accounts for $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, and Team covers twelve accounts with unlimited teammates for $99, or $79 billed yearly.
Hootsuite's plans page says monthly billing exists but shows no monthly price. On Sprout Social's pricing page, the inbox starts on Standard at $199 a seat a month, billed annually, as of October 2026. Metricool's free plan covers one brand with no team members, and Advanced adds unlimited team members from $53 a month billed yearly, or $67 monthly, as of October 2026.
One person on a budget: Buffer, BetterSocials and Hootsuite's $99 seat
Hootsuite Standard costs $99 a user a month on annual billing, so one marketer pays $99 and each extra person adds another $99. That price includes Hootsuite's inbox. For one person, Buffer and BetterSocials both come in well under it.
Buffer also has a free plan: $0 for up to three channels, one user and 10 scheduled posts per channel. BetterSocials has no free plan. Every BetterSocials plan starts with a 7-day free trial, card required, and Buffer's paid plans come with a 14-day trial.
The table compares Buffer and BetterSocials at matching account counts, in dollars per month, from prices read October 22, 2026. Buffer Essentials, BetterSocials Creator and BetterSocials Pro are one login each. Buffer Team and BetterSocials Team include unlimited team members.
| Setup | Buffer, yearly | BetterSocials, yearly | Buffer, monthly | BetterSocials, monthly |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Four accounts, one login | 4 x $5 on Essentials | $24 (Creator) | 4 x $6 on Essentials | $29 (Creator) |
| Six accounts, one login | 6 x $5 on Essentials | $39 (Pro) | 6 x $6 on Essentials | $49 (Pro) |
| Twelve accounts, whole team | 12 x $10 on Team | $79 (Team) | 12 x $12 on Team | $99 (Team) |
Buffer is cheaper at four and six accounts, by four to thirteen dollars a month depending on billing. At twelve accounts with a team, BetterSocials Team costs between forty and fifty dollars a month less than Buffer Team on either billing. A solo marketer on twelve accounts can stay on Buffer Essentials at 12 channels times $5 billed yearly and still pay less than BetterSocials Team's $79.
Contacts don't move a Buffer bill, but they move ManyChat's
Buffer charges for channels, not contacts, so a month when a post takes off costs the same as a quiet one. ManyChat, a DM automation tool, meters active contacts instead. Its Pro plan is $29 a month billed yearly, or $39 monthly, with 2,500 active contacts as of September 2026, and each extra contact costs $0.05 on monthly billing.
The meter starts to matter past the limit. On ManyChat's published rates, 10,000 active contacts in a month on Business, month to month, cost $99 + 2,500 x $0.025 = $161.50.
BetterSocials doesn't bill per contact on any plan. Contacts, DMs, comments and keyword automations are unlimited, and the only metered item is AI credits. When the credits run out, the AI pauses instead of charging more.
Put Buffer and ManyChat in one stack and you can see what BetterSocials replaces. Buffer Essentials on six channels plus ManyChat Pro comes to $30 + $29 = $59 a month on annual billing, and past seventy dollars on monthly billing ($6 a channel plus $39). BetterSocials Pro covers six accounts for $39 a month billed yearly, or $49 monthly, with keyword DMs and the inbox in one plan.
Comments and DMs: what each inbox answers
Buffer's Community inbox, on every plan, replies to comments on Instagram professional accounts, Facebook Pages, TikTok, YouTube, Threads, LinkedIn, X, Bluesky, Mastodon and Google Business Profiles. It doesn't cover ad comments. Buffer has no DMs: its help center says it doesn't offer direct messaging, so your Instagram and Facebook messages stay in those apps.
BetterSocials puts comments and DMs in one inbox across six platforms: Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Threads and LinkedIn Company Pages. DMs come in from Instagram, Facebook Messenger and TikTok. TikTok DMs are reply-only, with at most 10 replies within 48 hours of the person's last message, on a TikTok Business account.
YouTube has no DM API for any tool, so YouTube is comments and public replies on BetterSocials too. On Instagram and Facebook, a keyword comment sends that person a DM with your link and posts a public reply. On TikTok, YouTube, Threads and LinkedIn Company Pages, no tool can turn a comment into a private DM, so the keyword posts a public reply with the link.
BetterSocials drafts replies in your voice from your past replies, plus AI rules you write, such as your hours or your booking link. Its AI setting has three positions: Off, Draft for me and Reply in my voice. Questions wait in Needs reply for your approval unless you turn on Answer questions too, which needs at least one AI rule first.
The AI answers DMs too. AI replies has a DMs section with the same Off, Draft for me and Reply in my voice settings, for Instagram, Facebook and TikTok DMs. With it off, AI assist drafts a DM reply when you click it. Each reply or draft uses one AI credit, and Creator includes 1,000 credits a month.
New comments and DMs that ask about price, booking or availability get a Lead tag and a push notification to your phone. Tracked links and a contacts list, both in beta, show which comment or DM led to a click.
BetterSocials isn't the only scheduler with a DM inbox. Agorapulse covers comments, DMs and reviews on every plan at $79 a user a month billed yearly, or $99 monthly, as of October 2026. Later's Conversations inbox starts on Growth at $37.50 a month billed yearly, or $50 monthly, as of September 2026.
What BetterSocials puts in one plan, at $29 a month for four accounts, is that inbox plus keyword comment-to-DM and voice-trained replies, with unlimited contacts.
When BetterSocials is the better buy
BetterSocials is the better buy when comments and DMs are where your leads come from. At four or six accounts you pay four to thirteen dollars a month more than Buffer, and that buys the DM inbox and keyword comment-to-DM without a second subscription, with AI drafts in your voice in the same plan. Every plan carries a 30-day money-back guarantee on the first paid charge.
For a team, the math flips. BetterSocials Team is $79 a month billed yearly, or $99 monthly, for twelve accounts and unlimited teammates, while Buffer Team's twelve channels at $10 or $12 each come to well over a hundred dollars.
When Buffer is the better buy
Buffer is the better buy if you publish far more than you converse. Its free plan covers three channels, and Essentials costs less than BetterSocials at every one-login account count in our table. Its comment inbox also reaches X, Bluesky, Mastodon and Google Business Profiles, and BetterSocials doesn't support X.
What you give up is DMs. You'll answer every Instagram and Facebook message in those apps.
